"AD" and "CZ" appear on almost every Indian fashion jewellery listing. Both refer to the same material. AD (American Diamond) is the Indian trade name for cubic zirconia (CZ), a lab-made crystal that is cut like a diamond and sparkles brightly. It is not a diamond and has nothing to do with America; the name is a marketing habit that stuck.
What makes AD jewellery different from other imitation styles
- Brilliance: faceted CZ throws light like a diamond.
- Finish: usually rhodium (white), rose gold or bright gold plating rather than antique.
- Look: modern, cocktail and bridal-sparkle rather than temple heritage.
- Setting: prong, pave and channel settings are common, rather than closed kemp-style settings.
Stone quality: what varies
| Feature | Better quality | Lower quality |
|---|---|---|
| Cut | Sharp, even facets | Rounded, uneven facets |
| Clarity | Clear, no cloudiness | Cloudy or visible inclusions |
| Colour | Colourless or true colour | Yellowish or uneven |
| Size matching | Uniform in pave | Mixed sizes |
Setting quality
AD pieces fail at the setting more than at the stone. Check:
- Prongs are even and hold each stone firmly
- Pave stones sit level with no gaps
- No glue visible where stones are glued
- Clasps and screws work smoothly
Plating on AD pieces
Rhodium gives the white, diamond-like look. Rose gold and gold tones suit fashion and bridal. Ask about the protective finish, because AD pieces are often worn more frequently than heavy bridal pieces.

Pricing AD against Kundan and temple
AD pieces are usually lighter than heavy temple or Kundan sets, and their value is in stone count and setting labour rather than metal weight. That makes them attractive for retailers who want sparkle at mid price points. For distributors, AD also has a younger, more western-leaning customer base, so it balances a range that is heavy on traditional bridal. Read Kundan vs AD for resellers for how the two categories sell side by side.
CZ compared with diamond
Cubic zirconia is crystalline zirconium dioxide, grown in a lab and cut like a diamond. It is a good imitation because its optical properties are close, but not identical:
| Property | Cubic zirconia | Diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness (Mohs scale) | About 8 to 8.5 | 10 |
| Refractive index (brilliance) | About 2.15 to 2.18 | About 2.42 |
| Dispersion (fire, the rainbow flashes) | Higher than diamond | Lower |
| Density | Heavier for the same size | Lighter |
In practice that means CZ shows a lot of colourful fire, sometimes more than a diamond, and it scratches more easily than diamond but far less than glass. Over years, the facet edges of CZ worn every day can dull slightly.
Trade grades: A, AA, AAA, AAAAA
CZ suppliers sell stones in informal grades, often written as A, AA, AAA and AAAAA (5A). There is no international standard behind these labels, but in general higher grades have sharper, more even facets, better polish and clearer colour. For bridal AD sets, ask your manufacturer which grade they use and keep it fixed for re-orders, because mixing grades in one piece shows as uneven sparkle.
Coloured CZ
Coloured CZ imitates ruby, emerald, sapphire and other gems. It is common in AD bridal sets and cocktail rings. As with kemp, the colour must match across stones and across batches, so record the shade against the design code.
Storage and handling
CZ stones do not tarnish, but the plating around them can. Store AD pieces individually so stones do not scratch other pieces, and keep them away from moisture.
Selling AD honestly
Describe AD pieces as "American Diamond (cubic zirconia) set" or "CZ stones", never as diamonds. Customers who later learn a piece they thought was diamond is CZ lose trust in the shop, not just the piece. Honest labels also protect you under consumer law. The sparkle sells the set on its own merits: that is why AD has been one of India's steadiest fashion jewellery categories for decades.
