Jhumkas are the most versatile earrings in Indian jewellery. They sell across regions, ages and price points, and they move all year. For many wholesalers, jhumkas are the category that keeps cash flowing between bridal peaks.
Jhumka styles
- Temple jhumkas: antique gold with kemp and pearl drops, deity or peacock tops.
- Kundan jhumkas: glass stones with pearl hangings.
- Oxidised jhumkas: silver-look with dark recesses, from small to statement.
- AD jhumkas: CZ-studded bells for party wear.
- Antique jhumkas: aged gold, often with beads.
- Jhumka with ear chain: attached mattal for bridal looks.
Sizes and weight
Stock at least three sizes of your best designs: a small daily jhumka, a medium festive one and a large bridal statement piece. One design family in three sizes lets a customer choose by occasion and lets you serve more price points from a few moulds.
Weight is the most common reason customers return earrings. For daily wear, lighter zinc alloy jhumkas with hollow domes sell better; for bridal, heavier pieces need support from an ear chain or a screw back. Record the weight of each approved sample so bulk goods stay within range.
Fittings compared
| Fitting | Comfort | Security | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fish hook | Light, easy | Can slip out | Small daily jhumkas |
| French hook with a back | Good | Better | Medium jhumkas |
| Push stud | Easy | Good | Everyday and small jhumkas |
| Screw back or push back on a post | Very secure | Very good | Heavy temple and bridal jhumkas |
| Clip-on | No piercing needed | Moderate | Customers without pierced ears |
Offering clip-on versions of popular designs reaches customers without pierced ears, a small but real market.

- Even finish inside the bell
Stocking strategy
Jhumkas sell in every month: college students wear them with kurtis, working women with sarees, and brides with everything. Keep a steady base stock of your top designs all year, build the size ladder (everyday, festive, bridal), and add seasonal colours ahead of Navratri and the wedding peaks.
Regional notes
Temple jhumkas lead in the South; oxidised jhumkas lead with college and daily-wear buyers in the West and North; Kundan jhumkas lead in bridal North Indian wear; AD jhumkas sell in metros.

Jhumkas as an add-on sale, and how to display them
Jhumkas are the easiest upsell in jewellery. A customer buying a saree, a necklace set or even bangles will often add a pair if they are displayed close to the billing counter. Hang them on stands at eye level so they swing naturally - the movement of the drops is part of what sells them - grouped by size and finish, with one of each design out of its bag. Distributors can help retailers by supplying jhumkas on display cards in mixed trays, so the counter refills quickly.
Custom jhumka briefs
Give the bell diameter, total drop length, top motif, and whether you need screw backs, hooks or ear chains. For heavy bridal jhumkas, ask the factory to suggest the lightest construction that keeps the look.
The parts of a jhumka
A classic jhumka has three parts:
- The top (stud): a decorated disc, flower or motif that sits on the earlobe.
- The bell (jhumki): the dome or umbrella shape hanging below, often with engraved or stone-set detail.
- The drops: pearls, beads or small bells around the rim of the dome.
Many designs add a chain (sahara or kaan chain) that runs from the earring to the hair, taking some weight off the lobe. For heavy bridal jhumkas, a support chain can be the difference between a customer wearing them all evening and taking them off after an hour.
