The kasu mala, also called kasulaperu in Telugu, is a necklace made of gold coins, usually stamped with Lakshmi. It is a symbol of prosperity and a staple of South Indian bridal and festive jewellery. Imitation kasu malas bring the look within reach and sell steadily.
What a kasu mala is, and the designs you will see
"Kasu" means coin. The kasu mala (in Telugu, kasulaperu) is a long necklace of coins, traditionally embossed with the goddess Lakshmi, symbol of wealth and prosperity. It is worn by brides and at festivals across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala, and many families consider it an essential part of the bridal set.
- Classic Lakshmi coins, with the goddess seated on a lotus; double-sided coins look richer when the coins turn.
- Coins with kemp stones, red or green, at the centre or edge, or at intervals along the mala.
- Coins with pearl or bead drops below each coin.
- Small and large coin sizes, from delicate daily-wear chains to heavy bridal malas.
- Kasu mala with a pendant: a central Lakshmi or peacock pendant.
- Short kasu choker for lighter looks, and a kasu vaddanam (coin waist belt) to match.
Lengths and layering
Kasu malas range from shorter necklaces around 18 inches to long bridal malas of 30 inches or more, and are often layered with a choker and a shorter necklace. Keep one classic long bridal kasu mala and one shorter festive or daily version of your best designs in steady supply - they are among the most reliable sellers in South Indian ranges.
Finishes
Antique gold is traditional. Bright gold suits customers wanting a real-gold look. Matte suits modern buyers.
Quality checks
Each coin is cast from a mould, plated and finished, then linked individually or attached to a chain. The mould decides how clear the Lakshmi face looks, so look closely at several coins on the sample: blurred features are the first sign of worn moulds or poor casting, and make an otherwise good necklace look cheap.
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Coin detail | Face, border and edge crisp |
| Coin alignment | Coins lie flat and evenly spaced |
| Joints | Strong links between coins |
| Finish | Even across all coins |
| Clasp | Secure for a heavy necklace |

Selling kasu malas
Kasu malas sell well as auspicious purchases around Akshaya Tritiya, Varalakshmi Vratham and Diwali, as well as for weddings. Present them respectfully as prosperity pieces, explain the design, and offer matching coin earrings or bangles.
Briefing a kasu mala
Give the coin diameter, number of coins or total length, finish, and whether you want kemp stones or a pendant. For export to the diaspora, ask for sturdy links, since these necklaces travel far.
Care
Kasu malas have many coins and links; store them flat and advise customers to keep them dry.
