"Low MOQ" is a popular search among jewellery sellers. Low minimums are useful, but they come with trade-offs. Understanding both sides helps you build the right supplier mix for your stage of business.
What low MOQ suppliers offer
- Buy a few units of many designs
- Test new styles with little risk
- Ready stock, quick dispatch
- Good for new or small businesses
What they usually cannot offer
- Factory-level unit prices
- Custom designs or changes
- Guaranteed repeat of the same design
- Consistency across large re-orders
What higher MOQ manufacturers offer
- Lower unit prices at volume
- Custom and exclusive designs
- Consistent re-orders from the same moulds
- Control over finish, stones and packing
- Approved samples and pre-dispatch checks
What they require
- Commitment to quantity per design (at Jagruti, 200 pcs per design (400 for earrings and pendants))
- Advance payment and lead time
- Planning ahead of peaks
Side-by-side
| Low MOQ supplier | Manufacturer | |
|---|---|---|
| Units per design | Few | Hundreds |
| Unit price | Higher | Lower |
| Custom designs | Rare | Yes |
| Re-order consistency | Uncertain | High |
| Lead time | Short | Longer |
The smart mix
Many established wholesalers use both: low MOQ suppliers to test designs and fill gaps, and a manufacturer for proven bestsellers and exclusives. As a design proves itself, move it to the factory.
Which one are you?
If you buy a few pieces per design for one shop, a low MOQ supplier fits better. If you supply shops, run multiple stores or sell at volume online, the manufacturer route gives better margins and control. Read what MOQ means or see how we supply wholesalers.
An example of moving up
A reseller buys twenty units each of forty designs from a low MOQ supplier for the festive season. Six designs sell out; the rest sell slowly. Next season, the reseller orders those six proven designs from a manufacturer at 300 units each, at a lower unit price, and keeps using the low MOQ supplier for testing new ideas. Over two or three seasons, most of the reseller's volume moves to factory-made bestsellers, while the testing budget stays small.
Cost per piece at different MOQs
Low-MOQ suppliers usually sell ready stock or small runs, and their price per piece is higher because each piece carries more of the handling, storage and design cost. High-MOQ manufacturers spread design and mould costs over hundreds of pieces, so the price per piece falls, but you must buy the full minimum.
A useful way to compare: work out the total cost of reaching the quantity you actually need, including the extra stock you would hold at a high MOQ, and the higher unit price at a low MOQ. For a design you are testing, low MOQ often wins; for a proven best seller, the factory usually wins.
Hidden costs on both sides
| Low MOQ supplier | High MOQ manufacturer |
|---|---|
| Higher unit price | Stock held until it sells |
| Designs may not be available again | Advance payment and waiting time |
| Less control over quality | Need to forecast demand |
| Less consistency on repeats | Minimum quantities per design |
Moving a design from low to high MOQ
When a design bought in small lots keeps selling, move it to a manufacturer. Send the manufacturer the design, your sales numbers and the finish you want; they can quote for production at their MOQ, often at a much lower unit price. That is how many wholesalers grow margin without raising retail prices.
Questions to ask yourself
- How many pieces of this design will I sell in one season?
- How long can I hold stock before it sells?
- Do I need this design again later, exactly the same?
- How important is the lowest unit price for this item?
If the answers point to large quantities, repeat orders and price sensitivity, a manufacturer at higher MOQ is the better fit. If they point to small quantities and testing, go low MOQ.
At Jagruti
Our MOQ is 200 pieces per design (400 for earrings and pendants), made to order. For buyers who need smaller quantities, approved trade accounts can also order ready stock where available and paid samples of catalogue designs.
A realistic path
Most wholesale businesses use both kinds of supplier for years. Low-MOQ suppliers keep the range fresh and let you test ideas cheaply; manufacturers give you margin and consistency on the designs that carry your business. The skill is in moving each design to the right supplier at the right time.
