Durga Puja is the biggest festival in West Bengal and is celebrated widely in Assam, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and Tripura, and by Bengali communities everywhere. People dress in new clothes and jewellery for each day of pandal hopping, making it the top festive jewellery season in eastern India.
What sells
- Jhumkos (bell earrings) in many sizes
- Festive necklace sets, lighter than bridal
- Gold-tone bangles to pair with shakha-pola
- Tikli and hair accessories
- Oxidised pieces for younger buyers
- Rings and small pendants
Outfit pairing
Traditional red-and-white sarees for Ashtami and Dashami, and colourful sarees and ethnic wear for other days. Gold-tone jewellery dominates, with oxidised pieces for fusion looks.
After Puja
Kali Puja and Diwali follow closely, then the Bengali wedding season. Many Puja pieces continue selling.
Keep festive stock visible through November. Record what sold by design, colour and price point in the final week, while it is fresh. That record is the best guide to next year's order.
Retailer tips
Offer Puja bundles: necklace, jhumko and bangles in matching finish. Bundles lift average sale value.
We manufacture Bengali-style and festive pieces at 200 pcs per design (400 for earrings and pendants). See bridal jewellery manufacturer, Bengali bridal jewellery and the Kolkata guide.
Common mistakes
Underestimating transit time from western India and receiving stock after shopping has already peaked. Another is stocking only heavy sets, when most Puja buyers want a new light set and earrings for each day of pandal hopping.
A sample order
A Kolkata distributor might order four jhumko designs, two light festive necklace sets, a bangle set and a tikli design, at MOQ quantities (200+ pcs per heavy design, 400+ per earring or pendant design), arriving well before the start of Puja shopping.
How the date is set, and why it moves
Durga Puja is celebrated in the month of Ashwin, usually in September or October, with the main days (Shashthi to Dashami) overlapping the last days of Navratri. Because the festival follows the lunar (or luni-solar) calendar, its date on the Gregorian calendar shifts from year to year. Check the date for the coming year as soon as the new panchang or calendar is published, and plan factory orders backwards from it rather than from last year's date.
Why jewellery matters at Durga Puja
For Bengalis everywhere, Durga Puja is the year's biggest celebration: five days of pandal visits, food, music and new clothes. Women traditionally wear a new saree each day, often with matching jewellery. On Bijoya Dashami, married women take part in sindoor khela, smearing each other with sindoor, usually dressed in red-bordered white sarees and gold-tone jewellery.
Selling Durga Puja jewellery well
- Jhumkos, chokers and bangles are the volume items.
- Red and gold suit sindoor khela; pastels suit daytime outfits.
- Display by early September: Kolkata shoppers buy early and in large numbers.
A ready-made assortment
| Piece | Share of the order | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jhumkos | About a third | The volume sellers |
| Light festive necklace sets | About a quarter | Pandal-hopping |
| Bangles | About a fifth | Worn with shakha-pola |
| Red and gold sets for sindoor khela | The rest | Bijoya Dashami |
Keep several colour options for the five days of Puja outfits.
Selling online for this occasion
Bengalis in other cities and abroad buy Puja jewellery online in September. Ship early and show delivery dates clearly.
Display ideas
Show jewellery with sarees in the colours of each Puja day, and a red-and-white sindoor khela look for Dashami.
Briefing your staff
Staff should suggest light sets for pandal-hopping and a heavier set for Ashtami or Dashami.
Working with your manufacturer for this season
Confirm designs and quantities by June or early July, so production (about a month for made-to-order designs), approval and transport all fit before your shelves need the stock. Puja stock must be in Kolkata shops by early September, and transport to the East takes about a week. Ask the factory to keep a record of the approved finish and stone colours, so any mid-season re-order matches the first batch.
