Filigree is metalwork made from fine wires twisted and soldered into lace-like patterns. India has famous filigree traditions: Cuttack in Odisha (tarakasi), Karimnagar in Telangana, and Bengal. Imitation filigree recreates the delicate look at accessible prices.
Filigree traditions, and how imitation filigree is made
India has several famous filigree crafts:
- Cuttack tarakasi (Odisha): silver filigree, GI tagged in 2024, known for flowers, leaves and Konark wheel motifs.
- Karimnagar silver filigree (Telangana): GI tagged in 2007, known for fine wire work in jewellery and decorative pieces.
- Bengali gold filigree: delicate gold work in bridal jewellery.
Traditional filigree is made by twisting fine silver or gold wires and soldering them into lace-like patterns - slow, skilled work. Imitation filigree-look jewellery reproduces the pattern in one of two ways:
- Cast filigree-look: the pattern is modelled and cast in one piece. Consistent and durable, it suits larger runs at lower cost - the best balance for most wholesale ranges.
- Wire-worked: fine base-metal wires shaped and joined, closer to true filigree but slower, more expensive and more delicate; worth it for premium or gifting lines.
Both are finished silver-plated, oxidised or gold-plated. Describe cast pieces as filigree-look, never as handmade filigree.
Pieces that sell
- Filigree jhumkas and drop earrings
- Pendants
- Bangles and cuffs
- Hair clips and brooches
- Lightweight necklace sets
Why filigree sells, and where it fits
Filigree looks large, intricate and handcrafted while staying light, which suits earrings especially. It sits between everyday fashion jewellery and traditional festive wear: light enough for daily use, intricate enough for festivals, and suited to handloom sarees, kurtis and Indo-western outfits. A small filigree line adds variety to an oxidised or silver-look range and complements gold-tone festive ranges. It is also popular with tourists and as a gift: packaged on cards with a short description of the tradition, it sells well in gift shops.
Quality points
- Patterns complete, no broken sections
- Openwork fine enough to look delicate but strong enough not to bend - thin castings bend in transit or at the counter
- Smooth, no sharp wire ends
- Even plating in fine gaps
- Secure hooks
Openwork traps dust and moisture and can bend: pack pieces so they do not tangle with others, and advise customers to clean gently with a soft dry brush and store pieces separately.
Stocking tips
Filigree earrings are strong everyday and gifting items. Offer silver-look, gold-tone and oxidised versions of best-selling designs, and pack them in small boxes for Raksha Bandhan, Diwali and Christmas.
We make filigree-look pieces at 200 pcs per design (400 for earrings and pendants). See oxidised jewellery wholesale and Odia jewellery wholesale.
Briefing a filigree design
Tell the manufacturer the motif, the size, the finish (silver, gold-tone or oxidised), whether you want cast filigree-look or wire-worked, and any stones or beads. Ask to see the sample from the side as well as the front, to judge depth and strength.
