Packaging does two jobs in imitation jewellery: it protects the finish on the way to the counter, and it helps the piece sell. For wholesalers and distributors the first job matters most. For private label brands, both do.
Protective packaging
Individual zip pouches. The basic standard. Each unit sealed separately so pieces do not scratch each other and air contact is reduced.
Anti-tarnish materials. Anti-tarnish paper or pouches slow down discolouration. Useful for stock that will sit in warehouses or travel to humid regions.
Foam or card inserts. Keep necklaces flat and earrings paired.
Cartons. Strong outer cartons with dividers, labelled by design code and quantity.
Retail-ready packaging
Printed cards. Earrings on cards with your brand name. Good for hanging displays.
Boxes. Bridal and premium sets in boxes that open into a display. Adds perceived value and cost.
Care cards. A small card with care advice reduces returns.

Briefing private label packaging
- Logo files and brand colours
- Sizes by piece type (earrings, necklace sets, bangles)
- Material: paper, card, fabric pouch, rigid box
- Printed information: brand, care, "imitation jewellery" labelling as required
- Quantity: packaging suppliers have their own MOQs
Custom packaging is usually arranged for regular accounts, because packaging suppliers also have minimum runs.
Labelling and honesty
Label imitation jewellery clearly as imitation or fashion jewellery. Avoid any wording or marks that suggest precious metal purity. It protects your customers and your business.

Thinking in cost per piece
Packaging looks expensive when quoted per thousand units, but what matters is the cost per piece against the selling price. A zip bag and anti-tarnish strip add very little to each piece and prevent most tarnish complaints. A printed box may be worth it on a bridal set that sells at a high price, and not on a festival stud that sells in volume.
Anti-tarnish: what actually works
Anti-tarnish strips and papers contain compounds that absorb the sulphur gases in air that darken silver and plating. They work best in a closed bag, and they are used up over time, so very long storage needs fresh strips. Silica gel sachets control moisture, which slows corrosion of any exposed base metal. Together, a sealed bag, a strip and a sachet give plated jewellery the best chance of reaching the customer looking new.
Packing by product type
- Earrings: pairs on a card or in a small bag, so they do not tangle or separate.
- Necklace sets: necklace and earrings together in one bag or box, with the necklace laid flat, not coiled tightly.
- Long haarams and malas: flat in a longer bag or box so pendants and drops do not twist.
- Bangles: stacked in tubes or boxes by size, since loose bangles rub and scratch.
- Maang tikka and hair pieces: individual bags with a card to keep chains straight.
Labelling each pack
A small label with the design code, colour and quantity on each inner pack makes counting, storing and re-ordering far easier for you and for your retailers. It costs almost nothing and saves hours at every stocktake.
Packaging for online sellers
If you sell online, pack for the courier journey and the customer's first impression: a sealed bag inside a pouch or box, a care card, and enough padding that the parcel survives being dropped. Returns caused by damage in transit cost far more than better packing.
Storing packed stock
Keep packed jewellery in closed cartons or drawers, away from sunlight, bathrooms and kitchens, and off damp floors. Rotate stock so older packs sell first.
